Mac disk space analysis: getting started

Get started with FindSpace for Mac: check compatibility, activate your license, scan a disk or folder, and find large and hidden files before you clean up.

Find what is filling your Mac.

Analyze a disk or folder to see the paths and sizes of large items. Check their contents with Quick Look and Finder, then choose to move them to Trash or iCloud. Analysis alone never deletes files.

1. Install on your Mac

Check the download page for the current release, supported macOS versions and installation instructions.

2. Activate your license

Open license management from the app’s Find Space menu to activate this Mac with your purchased key. You can recover the key on the website’s My licenses page.

3. Analyze a disk or folder

Choose a disk or folder and grant access. Check the excluded-items notice for unreadable locations or cloud files that are not downloaded. You can start with the app’s 10 MB sample exercise.

4. Inspect large items

Expand folders and search by name or path to find large items. Use Quick Look or Finder from the details view to check their contents. Even when an item is suggested for review, decide whether you still need it.

5. Clean up only what you have checked

Confirm and move unneeded items to Trash. Move files you want to keep to a selected iCloud folder. Emptying Trash and removing local downloads after confirming an iCloud upload are separate actions.

6. Check actual free space and history

Check the disk’s actual free space in the space view. The sum of file sizes may differ from the space regained. Comparable complete scans of the same location with matching settings can also show items that have grown.

Coming update: Basic and Expert modes

The redesigned app starts with a disk list and a tutorial. Expert mode provides large-file, type, and app views, advanced filters, history, export, and automatic analysis. This mode separation is a redesign after the public 0.3.0 (12) release and is not yet included in the public download.
